Leeds Museums and Galleries

Leeds Museums and Galleries (LMG) is the largest local authority-run museum service in the country and has one of the largest and most significant multidisciplinary collections in the UK. We care for 1.3 million objects which we use to inspire, educate, entertain and challenge the people of Leeds and visitors to our city. We are part of Leeds City Council’s (LCC) City Development Directorate and play a significant role in shaping the cultural life of our city. Our work continues to support LCC’s ambitions in the ‘Best Council Plan’ as it strives to be the best city in the UK by 2030. LMG actively contributes to many of LCC’s priorities including making Leeds the best place to grow old in and supporting children to have the best start in life. We deliver on health and wellbeing, skills development and supporting social care. Our nine venues comprise Abbey House Museum (Grade II*), Kirkstall Abbey (Grade I listed and Scheduled Ancient Monument), Leeds Art Gallery (Grade II), Leeds City Museum (Grade II), Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills (Grade II* and II listed), Thwaite Mills Watermill (Grade II), Leeds Discovery Centre, Lotherton Hall and Temple Newsam (Grade I listed). Geographically spread around Leeds from the city centre to outlying rural areas, our venues provide key points of engagement with our collections for audiences and contribute their own narratives to the city’s histories.
